Prepping to Survive & Keeping it Simple

About Us

Welcome to Survival Prepper 101, a comprehensive guide to preparedness for beginners in an unpredictable world. Whether you’re a seasoned prepper or just beginning your journey into the realm of readiness, our platform is designed to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to face any challenge.

Our Background

My wife and I are what you might call “accidental preppers.” We kind of stumbled into it without really knowing what we were doing. Yet being prepared has always been part of our lives.

Sailing

Before prepping was even a “thing,” I had a deep understanding of long distance sailing, which included several ocean crossings in small sailboats. This was back in the 1970s! Of course, undertaking that kind of activity without being prepared for the worst would have been an invitation to disaster.

Long distance sailing illustrates the progression from prepper to survivalist we discuss in the first post on this site – see Prepper to Survivalist. When getting the boat and oneself ready for the voyage, you are in prepper mode. As soon as you set sail, you are in survival mode.

No doubt, preparing for long distance sailing is very different from land-based prepping. However, you will find some of the techniques we used way back then for food preservation without refrigeration explained within this site.

Boy Scouts

And then, before sailing, there was the Boy Scouts with its famous motto “Be Prepared.” The motto was devised by Baden-Powell, an English soldier, who founded the Boy Scout movement back in 1907. So that stuck too.

Baden Powell wrote Scouting for Boys in 1908. He stated that to Be Prepared means “you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty.”

There is no official emblem for the prepper or survivalist movement – nor should there be. One of the prepper/survivalist strategies is to lie low and not advertise your presence, lest you become a target. But if we were to be asked for a symbol, we would adopt the boy scouts arrowhead or fleur-de-lis. Not least because of their outdoor ethos and their motto, Be Prepared. So, for no other reason we have adopted the boy scout symbol as the logo for this website.

Business

And then there is the famous saying in business: Proper Preparation Prevents P*ss Poor Perfornance. That has always stuck with us, although we are retired from business now.

Home

Some 30 years ago my wife and I settled in the California desert near Palm Springs. We found 5 acres in Sky Valley. We were not consciously “prepping aware” back then but perhaps it was just instinctual survival response “to get away from it all.” In the meantime, we have become conscious preppers.

CERT

Our journey tp prepping included participation in our local CERT(Community Emergency Response Team). This program is sponsored by FEMA and trains local community volunteers in emergency response to disaster situations. There is plenty in this training that can be useful to a prepper as well as helping neighbors in an emergency.

This Site

We felt that it is time to share what we have learned about prepping, both from our own experience and from others. There are many wonderful websites on prepping out there and we will link to them as valuable resources.

Purpose of this Site

Our Purpose Here Is Threefold:

  • To focus on prepping and its commonalities with survival
  • To keep things simple and accessible to newcomers, hence our website address: SurvivalPrepper101. Simple things get done, leaving you prepared. The complex gets postponed, leaving you unprepared.
  • To bring you the resources you need to help you succeed in prepping
